This course provides participants who have basic knowledge and skills in First Aid principles the next level of skills to manage first aid situations with more advanced techniques until the arrival of medical assistance, including the use of oxygen therapy, suction and how to put in an airway into an unconscious casualty.
You will learn about how to manage a scene and monitor a casualty while waiting for help, how to recognise and respond to first aid situations including conducting casualty assessment, how to assess and manage a catastrophic bleed with both a tourniquet or haemostatic dressing, and how to set up and use medical oxygen.
This course covers adult and child conditions.
Training and assessment is done on behalf of ABC First Aid, RTO 3399

- Manage an unconscious, breathing casualty including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise
Manage unconscious, non-breathing adult including:
- Performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
- Performing at least 2 minutes of bag-valve-mask (with oxygen) ventilation and at least 2 minutes of compression during resuscitation procedures involving at least two rescuers on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
- Selecting and inserting an appropriate basic airway adjunct
- Responding appropriately using positioning and suctioning in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
- Demonstrating a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
- Following the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
- Managing oxygen equipment appropriately
- Handing over to emergency services
